Regional Weed Strategy

The draft NIWAC Regional Weed Strategy has been circulated to the group and comments have been sought.

We have completed the weed risk prioritisation process for the New England and North West regions, and a sincere thank you to all those who participated.

The prioritisation process was developed by the NSW DPI and aims to provide a standard, nationally accepted and transparent process to help make decisions about the introduction, declaration and prioritisation of weed species[1] and is outlined in Appendix One of the Regional Weed Strategy.

NIWAC is one of the first groups to use the Weed Risk Management scoring system.

The questionaire developed by NSW DPI is applied to each weed, with scores calculated for:

Invasiveness )
) Comparative Weed Risk
)
Impacts
Potential Distribution

Control Costs )
) Feasibility of Coordinated Control
)
Persistence
Current Distribution

A weed risk score and a feasibility of co-ordinated control score are then applied to a matrix supplied by the NSW DPI (see below).

A summary of the weed results and control measures are supplied in the excerpt from the draft Regional Weed Strategy.
