Who are we and what do we do?

The Northern Inland Weeds Advisory Committee (NIWAC) promotes a regional approach to management of noxious and other environmental weeds by bringing together all local and state government organisations and other bodies involved in land management throughout the North West and New England Regions of New South Wales, Australia.

The NIWAC Region covers 10 Local Control Authorities (councils and county councils) and 6 Rural Land Protection Boards.  Relevant state government agencies within the NIWAC region are also represented e.g. Department of Primary Industries, Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR), Department of Conservation (formerly National Parks and Wildlife Service).

The current NIWAC chair is Cr Maria Woods (pictured) from Walcha Shire Council.  Regional Planning Coordinator is Heather Apps, located at Armidale (contact details below).  NIWAC Secretary for 08/09 is Andrew Schweitzer.  Andrew is located at Tamworth (contact details below).

NIWAC meets every three months.

Our Mission

To reduce the economic, environmental and social impact of weeds in the North West & New England Regions of NSW.

What sort of Weeds does NIWAC deal with?

Of primary concern are 'declared' noxious weeds (i.e. those that are defined and must be controlled as per the Noxious Weeds Act 1993). However, NIWAC also considers other 'non-declared' weeds which are or have the potential to become a problem to the Region's environment...

How does the NIWAC Committee work?

By bringing related land managers together - key groups and individuals involved in weed management - to provide a forum to :-

  1. Discuss and debate regional weed management issues;

  2. coordinate local and regional weed management plans, including publicity initiatives; and

  3. encourage all members and other stakeholders to work together in a constructive and coordinated manner.

    Through our members, the Committee also aims to INFLUENCE PRIVATE LAND MANAGERS, especially on issues of regional significance.                                                Photo by Massiel - St Johns Wort Field Trip
